5 Tips to Improve Your Padel Serve

The serve in padel might appear deceptively simple, but mastering it can transform your entire game. At Padel Malta, our coaches spend considerable time helping players develop a serve that's both consistent and tactically smart. Here are five proven tips to elevate your serving game.

    1. Perfect Your Stance and Preparation

Everything starts with a solid foundation. Position yourself behind the service line with your feet shoulder-width apart, body angled slightly towards your target. At Padel Malta, we teach players to keep their weight on their back foot during preparation, then transfer it forward as they strike.

Hold the ball at waist height and let it drop naturally. Many beginners at Padel Malta make the mistake of throwing the ball too high or too far in front, which leads to inconsistent contact. The ball should drop and bounce once before you make your underhand swing.

    2. Master the Contact Point

The rules state you must hit the ball at or below waist height, so finding the optimal contact point is crucial. Aim to strike the ball when it's just below your hip, with your arm extended but relaxed. This gives you maximum control over direction and spin.

During coaching sessions at Padel Malta, we often see players rushing the contact, hitting the ball too early or too late. Take your time. The serve isn't about power – it's about setting yourself up for the next shot.

    3. Target the Corners with Purpose

A well-placed serve is worth more than a powerful one. The two primary targets are the T (centre of the service box) and the wide corner towards the glass. At Padel Malta's courts, you'll notice how the glass walls can work in your favour when you serve wide.

Serving to the T keeps your opponents guessing and limits their angles of return. Serving wide stretches them out of position and often results in weaker returns. The best players at Padel Malta vary their targets to keep opponents off balance.

    4. Develop Your Slice Serve

Adding slice to your serve keeps the ball low after the bounce, making it much harder for opponents to attack. To achieve this, brush the outside of the ball with a slightly open racket face. The ball should curve in flight and stay low when it bounces.

This technique takes practice, but our coaches at Padel Malta have helped countless players add this weapon to their arsenal. Start slowly, focusing on the brushing motion, then gradually increase your swing speed as you become more comfortable.

    5. Watch and Adapt to Your Opponent

The smartest servers at Padel Malta pay attention to their opponents' positioning and preferences. If they stand close to the T, go wide. If they favour their forehand, target their backhand. If they're aggressive, a slower, spinning serve can disrupt their rhythm.

Don't underestimate the psychological aspect of serving. At Padel Malta, we've seen matches turn on a player's ability to read their opponent and adjust accordingly. Your serve is the one shot where you have complete control – use it wisely.

The key to improving any aspect of your game is consistent practice. We encourage players at Padel Malta to spend the first ten minutes of each session working specifically on their serve. Track your accuracy, experiment with different spins, and don't be afraid to ask our coaches for feedback.
